I am happy to announce that we are done sweltering!
Since my last post on the subject of hotness, we have remedied the situation.
Last weekend we were headed over to Grandmom's house (that's David's wonderful grandmother) to visit and as we pulled into her drive, we noticed air conditioning units in the windows.
Don't worry, I'm not about to admit to robbing David's grandmother of her air conditioning.
Several years ago, she converted to central heating and air, but never removed the window units.
We were more than happy to take them off of her hands!
Thanks to Grandmom, we now have not one, not two, but THREE window units - one in every room!
We try to be good and last as long as we can without turning on the air, but it sure is nice to have them when 5pm rolls around and it's so hot you want to harm anyone who comes near you!
I am so happy that I can wear actual clothes inside again! My uniform while I've been at home this month has been not a lot more than underwear - I really need a job!
So thanks again Grandmom - you saved us!
(I guess I should probably send her a card. She doesn't have a computer, so I'm guessing she'll probably never read this!)
p.s. I thought that rather than showing pictures of our window units, I would take this opportunity to pull a photo from the family photo vault. This is my favorite picture of David's grandparents. They were living in Key West when this picture was taken. I wish we still dressed like that!

Sadness
If you're a child of the 80s like me, then you have to be sad about the death of Michael Jackson.
He was an amazing artist.
Some of my earliest memories from the late 80s/ early 90s are of my brother Aron, carrying his boombox on his shoulder singing and dancing to "Bad" and me and my mom and my brother belting out "Man in the Mirror" in the car.
I remember staying up with my brother to watch the MTV premiers of all of his amazing music videos.
And I remember living in Texas, singing "Heal the World" with my school while holding those little candles with cardboard bottoms, thinking "life can be great".
In short, many of my childhood memories seem to be set to the music of Michael Jackson. I don't have many memories set to a specific song, but his music encompassed the time and therefore became entwined with my memories.
I loved and still love his music.
I'm sad that he couldn't find peace is this life.
But I hope he knows that any mistakes he may have made don't undo all the good that he created.
I'll stop waxing sentimental now.
Peace.

Hello pretty
Love, love, love this outfit.
I love the structured heels and the structured jacket and the adorable skirt.
I may have mentioned this several times already, but I LOVE black and blue together!
p.s. I would kill for her hair.
AND how great is this leather jacket with the feminine red dress and heels? I have already decided that I'm getting the faux version of this at Urban Outfitters this Fall. They usually have a version of this, right? I think I will get a basket like this one for the front of my bike!

The Market at StudioPlex
My friend Beky and her friend Michele are starting up an awesome farmer's market. It's going to have great produce and handmade goods. The opening day will be this Saturday, June 27th, 8am - 1pm at StudioPlex Lofts on Auburn Avenue. David and I are going to be working there. If you're in the Atlanta area; you should definitely stop by!

And three years later . . .
It's finally here. David's first day as a graduate student in Architecture was yesterday! I drove him to school in the morning and waved goodbye. I felt sad and excited at the same time.
I'm really grateful and excited that he's able to go back to school, but I also know that this is going to be a huge time commitment, and I'm going to miss him.
He will be in school from 9am to 7pm Monday through Friday. I think he may have more breaks during the day once Fall semester starts, but once the projects start rolling in - he could be there till midnight or later! And this is pretty much the routine for three years! We have spent every second together for the last month, so this is going to be an adjustment.
I think once I have a job; it will be a lot easier for us to establish a routine and set aside time to be together. What would be AMAZING is if I could get one of the twenty jobs I've applied for at GA Tech. Then we could see each other for a few minutes every day!
So, separation anxiety aside, I can't express how excited I am about the things he's going to be learning. I can't wait for him to come home and tell me what he's done each day!
Our good friend Joseph came to see us last weekend, and brought with him a wonderful documentary about a famous architect's life and work. Much of the film is sad, but the moments about architecture are beautiful. Watching the film, I became even more excited about what David has the potential to do and be in this field.
So, it's going to be a long three years, but I know if we do it right, it will be totally worth it!
p.s. The film is titled My Architect. Everyone should see this documentary.

Fanciful Thoughts
So, I love our little house. However, I greatly underestimated my love of central heating/air (especially the "air" part). We have a window unit, but it's in the kitchen, which is the central room, so it doesn't exactly reach the living room or the bedroom. I am adjusting, but it's very difficult.
We keep telling ourselves that this is what people have done for forever. Only in recent history have we had the luxury of air conditioning, and only a small percentage of the world's population is able to take advantage of that luxury.
This is what we keep telling ourselves.
But it is not helping yet.
So while I swelter, I thought I would turn my mind to more pleasing things, such as

I love crisp blue and white in the bathroom,
and the chair pattern wallpaper adds a bit of whimsy!

Roomie Reunion
On Thursday we got together with my two roomies from Athens. Amy and Nathan had me and David and Dana and Ty over for dinner. It's funny, when we lived together we were all dating the guys we married!
I had so much fun catching up! I've missed getting to see them all the time - I'm excited to be living in the same city with them again!

100th Post: Our Little House
For my 100th post, I decided to finally post pictures of our new house. And when I say "new", I mean new to us, because our little house is actually 130 years old. So here are some photos. I am not a very talented photographer, so I don't really do the house justice. The light is amazing, but of course I can never figure out how to get a good picture without the flash. Oh well. We love it here and I've had the best time decorating it! I'm not quite done, but this is what we have so far.
Our porch with our knockout roses
The living room
I am so proud that we have finally framed this crest.
We got it three years ago with Janie and Adam
in Florida, and we took forever to frame it!

The kitchen - love the exposed shelving
David making our favorite Thai food
David did a wonderful job organizing our little recycling center
Our fireplace in the kitchen
I love the picture of my dad on the dresser.
I need something for the frame on the left, but it's an odd size.

The bathroom
Our favorite place: the back yard
The lovely hydrangeas
So, there it is. It's going to be a hot summer, but we have a great neighborhood for riding bikes and sitting on the back porch every night!
Our little scruffy girl.
The lovely hydrangeas
The jasmine smells wonderful
Our little fig tree getting the figs ready for us
And our little guardian on the roof.
His pants may be falling down,
but his purple pajamas look good otherwise.

Catching Up
Now that we're settled in Atlanta and have the internet again, I finally have time to catch up on some of the things we've been up to during our last month in Athens.
For instance . . .
We helped plan a great surprise party for our good friend Josh, who just graduated from law school.
Next we took a weekend trip to the mountains to my in-law's with my little brother Dawson.
We . . .
Next, we toured Misty Mountain Railroad. It's a huge model train city with scale models of North Georgia and Atlanta. These pictures do not do the place justice; it's pretty amazing. The man who built it originally started it for his grandchildren and now he lets people tour it and donates the entry fee to charity.
We spent our final night in Athens with some great friends and great food, thanks in large part to Aaron and Stephanie!

David manned the window to get the surprise just right.
We frightened Josh.
and had lots of fun!

We . . .
went for an early morning canoe on the Toccoa River.
After canoeing we drove to Copper Hill, Tennessee and stood in two places at once!

Our last month in Athens was one of the best! We will miss the town and especially our friends, but we're way excited about living in Atlanta. Plus, we're only an hour away if we want to visit!
